Tesla Faces Trademark Challenges Over ‘Robotaxi’ and ‘Cybercab’ Ahead of June Launch

Tesla Faces Trademark Issues for Robotaxi & Cybercab

California: Tesla’s efforts to acquire exclusive rights for the terms “Robotaxi” and “Cybercab” have faced immense challenges mere weeks before the company plans to commence a ride-hailing operation. A recent record submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) states that Tesla’s trademark application for “Robotaxi” was rejected because it was too generic.

The USPTO released a “nonfinal office action,” which claims that “Robotaxi” is popularly used by other firms for autonomous vehicles and is not distinctive enough to protect the trademark. Tesla has until August to provide additional evidence to avoid a dismissal of the application. The company must present brochures, advertisements, or screenshots to show that “Robotaxi” is singularly tied to its brand.

Meanwhile, Tesla’s bid to trademark the term “Cybercab,” introduced alongside its groundbreaking ‘futuristic’ EV-mounted Cyber cab, is experiencing delays and delays (and more delays) manifesting due to possible conflicts with other “Cyber” brands and especially aftermarket Cybertruck accessories.

Although one application of “Robotaxi” to vehicles was refused, one used to service provision, such as ride-sharing and rentals, has yet to be concluded. The USPTO has not yet decided whether to approve Tesla’s separate patents for the term “Robobus, ” also made in October last year.

Tesla filed all these trademarks on 10 October 2024, the day it unveiled the Cybertruck, a custom-built electric car intended to fuel this new autonomous fleet of ride-hailing vehicles.

The trademark hurdles question how Tesla will market and brand its delivery of the soon-to-be-made fleet of self-driving services if rights to use key terms are denied. The company has not announced anything related to the developments.
