Google AI Overviews Facing Growing Spam Issues, Experts Say

Google AI Overviews Facing Growing Spam Issues, Experts Say

California: Google, once known for its robust measures against spam, is now facing criticism as its AI Overviews—integrated directly into search results—become a hotspot for manipulated and low-quality content. SEO experts and industry leaders are raising concerns over the increasing presence of spam and misinformation in these AI- generated summaries.

A recent LinkedIn post by Lily Ray, Vice President of SEO Strategy at Amsive, highlighted how easily AI Overviews can be exploited. Spammers are creating misleading listicles and self-promotional articles that get cited as authoritative sources by Google’s AI, despite questionable accuracy. This has raised alarms about Google’s ability to fact-check and filter spammy content effectively.

Key Issues Identified:

  1. Hallucinations and Inaccurate Information: AI Overviews sometimes generate factually incorrect information, contradicting Google Business Profiles and the Knowledge Graph.
  2. Spammy Listicles: Self-published articles falsely ranking companies or individuals as “the best” are often cited by AI Overviews as credible sources.
  3. Content Duplication: The AI frequently regurgitates content from other sites, overshadowing original, high-quality work.
  4. Low-Quality Content: Manipulative AI-generated content is increasingly flagged as spam, affecting user trust and search experience.

Despite Google’s ongoing improvements and its focus on E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness), SEO practitioners worry that spammy AI Overviews could undermine search integrity. While Google is penalizing some low-quality content, experts argue that the platform still lacks robust mechanisms for filtering out manipulated information.

As Ray stated, “The fact that this type of spam works in AI Overviews shows how fundamentally flawed the system is. Google is apparently not using fact-checking or consensus mechanisms to verify its answers, simply repeating claims from random, unverified sources.”

With AI Overviews labeled as “experimental,” Google faces mounting pressure to address these flaws before they further erode user trust.
