Waymo Cleared to Expand Robotaxi Services Across More of Silicon Valley

California: Waymo has been permitted by the California Public Utilities Commission to operate its robotaxi service in more areas of Silicon Valley.

The introduction of Palau expanded the company’s chances of growth in the region, even though no fast changes have been specified on social media. Waymo is currently allowing people to use its fully automated ride-hailing service in some areas of San Francisco and on the Peninsula. Silicon Valley customers of the company include those from Mountain View, Palo Alto, Los Altos and Sunnyvale.

As a whole, Waymo’s efforts have provided coverage for about 85 square miles, including places in both San Francisco and Silicon Valley.

As part of their objective to deploy autonomous vehicles in large cities, they are currently expanding. While Waymo does not give a specific schedule for new areas, its plan for rolling out its services is becoming clear.

Waymo is also interested in providing a commercial service to and from San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Even though they are at the initial stages, the company got a temporary permit in March to outline the roads at the airport. Initially, people (not the vehicle’s computers) will drive the cars to collect the necessary data for fully autonomous driving. The mapping is a significant first step towards setting up a full commercial service at the airport in the future.

About 250,000 Waymo rides are taken by passengers every week in cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Austin. Because of legal approval and more people using these vehicles, Waymo is gradually serving the daily needs of travelers across the USA.
