California: The future of online shopping just got a major upgrade. Payments giants Visa and Mastercard are rolling out AI-powered shopping assistants, marking a bold new step into the world of “agentic commerce.”
Visa unveiled its new initiative, Intelligent Commerce, on Wednesday. This AI-driven platform enables digital agents to shop and make purchases for consumers, all within parameters set by the user. “Each consumer sets the limits, and Visa helps manage the rest,” said Jack Forestell, Visa’s Chief Product and Strategy Officer.
The company is partnering with industry heavyweights like OpenAI, Microsoft, IBM, Samsung, Stripe, and Perplexity, along with AI startups like Mistral and Anthropic, to make shopping experiences more personalized, secure, and seamless.
Just a day earlier, Mastercard introduced Agent Pay, a similar AI feature that embeds payment options directly into generative AI conversations. Whether planning a birthday bash or browsing new outfits, users can now interact with AI agents that suggest tailored options and handle the checkout process—including payment method recommendations like Mastercard’s One Credential.
Mastercard has also teamed up with Microsoft, IBM, Braintree, and Checkout.com to drive this next wave of smart commerce.
The trend doesn’t stop there. PayPal joined the race on Tuesday with its own agentic shopping solution, while Amazon is currently testing “Buy for Me,” an AI shopping assistant, with a select group of users.
Meanwhile, OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity have all showcased tools that use AI to search websites and assist with purchases—making AI-assisted shopping the next big frontier in consumer tech.
