xAI Rolls Out Memory Feature for Grok Chatbot, Rivals ChatGPT and Gemini

California: Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, is ramping up competition in the chatbot arena with the introduction of a new memory feature for its Grok assistant. This latest update enables Grok to recall user preferences and past interactions, offering more personalized and context-aware responses—bringing it closer in functionality to major players like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Announced late Wednesday, the memory feature is now live in beta on Grok.com and the Grok mobile apps for iOS and Android. With this enhancement, users can expect Grok to tailor recommendations and replies based on previous conversations. The feature functions similarly to ChatGPT’s memory, which was recently expanded to draw insights from a user’s entire chat history, and to Gemini’s persistent memory capabilities.

xAI emphasizes transparency in Grok’s memory system. Users can view exactly what information the chatbot retains and manage it directly. Individual memories can be deleted from within the chat interface on the web, with Android support coming soon. For those who prefer not to use the feature, it can be entirely disabled via the Data Controls page in the app’s settings.

Notably, the memory feature is currently unavailable in the European Union and the United Kingdom, likely due to regional privacy regulations. xAI confirmed that work is underway to integrate the memory function into the Grok experience on X (formerly Twitter), where the bot initially launched.
